John Washington Bay was born in Franklin County, Missouri February 14, 1838. He was the oldest child of Joseph and Emeline (Parker) Bay. Joseph was born in 1817 and died in 1900. He is buried in Pueblo, Colorado. Emily was born in 1822 and died in 1898. His grandparents were Robert and Polly (Hamilton) Bay who came from Grainger County, Tennessee to the St. Louis area c. 1811. They moved to Franklin County where they rreared a fairly large family.
John went off to the Civil War along with his brothers and cousins as Union soldiers. He enlisted in St. Louis on April 25, 1864 in Co. D 10th regiment Missouri Cavalry Volunteers. Later he transferred Co. K of the 2nd Cavalry. He was mustered out September 19, 1865 in Nashville, Tennessee.
John was a farmer, as were his parents and grandparents before him. He move to Howes Mill and married Martha Ann Dennison. They had eight children. Martha died in 1876 and John then married Sara Dalton.
John W. Bay died at the age of 81 in 1919 and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery.
