Kalley, Isaac, IN Vol

                                                       Sgt. Isaac M. Kalley

Co. A, 14th Regiment Indiana Infantry Volunteers

Isaac who was the youngest was born to Nathaniel B. and Rebecca (Hammon) Kalley on October 15, 1832 in Parke County, Raccoon Township, Indiana. Six children were born to them: Ruth who died when she was about 21 years old; Abram, b. 1824 and d. March 18, 1892 in Raccoon Township; George and William, both died in early childhood; Daniel who died in 1862; Vashti, b. 1830 and married John J. Webster. When Isaac was two his mother passed away. His father later married Charity (Gray) Nelson. They had five children, Mary, Malinda and three who died at a young age.

Isaac grew up on his father's farm and because his parents were poor he received very little education. At the age of 21 he became an apprentice to learn carpentry. However he left his apprenticeship to volunteer as a private in the Indiana Infantry Co. A, 14th Regiment. He enlisted on April 23, 1861 and was sent to West Virginia where he participated in his first battle at Rich Mountain. Other battles he fought in were at Shenandoah Valley, Cheat Mountain, Greenbrier, Romney, Strasburg and many others. While at Fredericksburgh he volunteered for a dangerous assignment. The assignment was to cross the pontoon bridge in the face of enemy fire, which meant almost certain death. In this attempt 56 percent of the men were killed and Isaac nearly lost his life when he was struck by a piece of shell. He had to remain in the hospital at Washington for several months before he could rejoin his regiment in Chancellorsville. There he had his gun shot out of his hand and then at Gettysburg he was wounded in the right shoulder. He recuperated from that wound at a hospital in Newark, New Jersey. This proved to be the end of his service as his term of service expired while in the hospital and he was not allowed to re-enlist due to his injuries. He did finish out his service in the 2nd Invalid Corps. He was discharged on April 23, 1864 with a distinguished service record and during his service he was promoted to sergeant.

Isaac married Catharine Elson on December 16, 1866, in Parke County, Rockville, Indiana. On the Raccoon Township, Parke County, Indiana, 1880, census it lists: Isaac M., age 47; Catharine, age 43; Arthur E., age 10; Isaac M. Jr., age 9 and Nora M., age 6.
