Co. F - 9th Regiment Indiana Infantry
George Washington Neldon was born in Ohio on June 18, 1837 the son of Jacob and Catherine Swoln Neldon. He married Barbra Howell on March 13, 1859 in Greene County, Indiana.
A daughter Mary Catherine was born on September 9, 1860. A son Jacob Riley followed, and then a second son, Zachery Neldon, born January 4, 1863. Sarah Ann was born in 1865, Martha Ellen in 1867, Barbara Cornelia, in 1868 and their last child, George Washington in 1871.
George enlisted December 9, 1864, a private in the 29th Indiana Infantry, Company F. He was honorably discharged in Marietta, Georgia December 8, 1865.
The 1880 Census shows the Neldons living in Montgomery County, Illinois. Martha Ellen and Barbara Cornelia died within days of each other in December of 1880.
The Neldons apparently kept in contact with other Indiana friends, Henry Poppenhouse and family, who had traveled and settled in Owensville, Gasconade County, Missouri (see John Henry Poppenhouse in this book).
George Neldon had traveled to Owensville in 1892 to see Jacob Tappmeyer in Canaan, Gasconade County, Missouri, regarding his military pension.
George's second son Zachery married Henry Poppenhouse's daughter Annie on August 22, 1894. Zackery eventually moved back to Illinois with his wife and children.
