Eben Litherland was a resident of Burlington, Illinois, when he enlisted in the 15th Regiment on August 24, 1861.  He was honorably discharged on January 26, 1865, serving a total of 4 years. Lt. Litherland was a member of the Major McKinley Club.

The companies that composed the 15th Cavalry Regiment were independent Infantry Regiments and acted as such.

They moved with the army from Cairo in the Spring of 1862, up the Tennessee River to Fort Henry.  Disembarked and moved to the rear when the Rebels evacuated the Fort.  After a few days they moved under the command of General Grant to Fort Donelson.  The Fort surrendered after a siege of three days.  Then up the Tennessee River with the fleet to Pittsburg Landing, participating in the Battle of Shiloh April 6th to April 7th, 1862 and on to the Siege of Corinth.  Ordered to Jackson, Tennessee to be organized into Stewart's Battalion commanded by Colonel Corine.  In the Spring of 1863, the Battalion moved throughout several states ending in Helena, Arkansas in November, 1863.  They did severe scouting in Arkansas and Mississippi.  In August, 1864, they were ordered to Springfield, Illinois to be discharged by expiration of term of service.  They were musted out on August 8, 1864.

The units who enlisted in 1862 were consolidated with the 10th Illinois Cavalry and moved to San Antonio, Texas where they were mustered out of service.
