Caleb Stewart enlisted in the 33rd Regiment on August 30, 1862 at Benton Barracks, Missouri. He was promoted to Sargeant on December 5, 1863. He is also listed as being wounded in the arm around the 15th or 16th of December at Nashville, Tennessee. Caleb Stewart was mustered out of service on August 10, 1865.
The 33rd was organized at Benton Barracks, Missouri from August 29th thru September 5, 1862. The Regiment did field duty in St. Louis and several counties in Missouri. It also did service in Helena, Arkansas and Vicksburg, Mississippi. the 33rd went in pursuit of General Price through Arkansas and Missouri. It also participated in the Battle of Nashville, Tennessee, December 15th and 16th and pursued Hood to the Tennessee River on December 17th thru 28th. Also participated in the Siege and capture of Fort Blakely and the occupation of Mobile, Alabama.
The Regiment returned to St. Louis in July and mustered out August 10, 1865. The 33rd Regiment lost 287 men. After the war, Caleb Stewart joined the Ransom G.A.R. Post #131 in St. Louis, MO.
