Pvt. William Henry Augustine
Co. F – 29th Regiment Indiana Infantry Vols.
Our veteran, WILLIAM HENRY AUGUSTINE, was born in 1841. He had 2 brothers and 4 sisters – some were born in Ohio, but William was born in Marshall, Indiana. All of the family made their living by farming.
At the age of 21, William joined the Twenty-Ninth Regiment of Indiana Volunteers when it was organized at La Porte in August of 1861. The men enlisted in South bend, Indiana. The regiment participated in the Battle of Shiloh, Siege of Corinth, and was part of Buell’s Army through Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky. Under Rosecranz, they occupied Murphreesboro and fought at Tallahoma, Chattanooga, and Chicamauga. The regiment re-enlisted as a Veteran Organization on January 1, 1864. When the men returned from a furlough in Indianapolis, they were stationed in Chattanooga. They moved to Marietta, Georgia where the Twenty-Ninth Regiment of Indiana Volunteers was disbanded on December 21, 1865.
William married Julia La Mossie of Grench-English descent. Sever daughters were born to them: my grandmother being the middle child.
After the war, William farmed and was a teamster in northern Indiana. The seven children were brought up on the farm but married and moved to the cities.
